How serendipity and creativity can bring a spark to learning
A Substantial Career

'A Substantial Career' is a book for everyone.

This began as a personal journal of the final year of a 35-year teaching career, but became a book about bringing serendipity and creativity into the life of any classroom and the life of teachers at any stage in their career. It is also for parents with children in school now and for the former students of the author.
It is about how to make teaching and learning innovative and exciting…both for the students and their teachers. How that spark can bring joy and further support curriculum goals by fostering student engagement in every subject area.
Although it is about that final year, it is sprinkled with reflections and memories that come from places scattered throughout that career. Places of humour, challenge, the connection between a teacher and much-loved students.
Who knew a newt would begin it all?

“Your work truly captured the complex, challenging but gratifying role of being a teacher. Teaching is a labour of love and even when the bell rings at the end of the school year, one never stops being a teacher.”
Parmjt Hari
District Principal
Burnaby School District 41

“Above all, what stands out for me was that this book was a celebration of teaching by a person whose starting point and primary focus in all her relationships with people, especially her students, was a focus on the affective.”
Nazru Deen
Retired Superintendent of Education
Ottawa, Canada
